When a black teenager was swimming at the beach in Chicago and accidentally crossed the line into the "white" part of the ocean, all hell broke loose. What followed was disgusting -- white people started to chuck rocks, and he died. Even though witnesses were able to tell police who they thought were responsible for the murder, police refused to make any arrests or begin an investigation. Riots raged for several weeks and when all was said and done, more than 500 people had sustained injuries, and thousands of black families' homes were burned down.
Woodrow Wilson publicly stated that whites were responsible for many of the race riots going on in America's cities and encouraged legislation against it.
